You have an Office product key in your email. Here is how to turn it into an installed, activated copy of Office — including the offline installer route when downloads are slow.

Step 1: Identify what you bought

Your delivery email tells you the exact edition — for example Office 2021 Professional Plus, Office 2021 Home & Business, or a Microsoft 365 plan. The install path differs slightly:

  • Retail editions (Home & Business, Home & Student) are redeemed through Microsoft's setup portal.
  • Professional Plus installs from the Office Deployment Tool or an ISO, then activates with the key directly.
  • Microsoft 365 accounts are sign-in based: you log into the account and install from the portal — no key entry at all.

Step 2: Remove old Office versions

Two versions of Office on one machine cause licensing conflicts and broken file associations. Uninstall any trial or older version through Settings → Apps first. Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) tool does a deeper cleanup if a normal uninstall leaves remnants.

Step 3: Download and install

Retail keys — the redeem route

  1. Go to setup.office.com and sign in with (or create) a Microsoft account.
  2. Enter the 25-character product key.
  3. The key links to your Microsoft account, and the site hands you the correct installer.
  4. Run it and wait — Office streams down in the background.

Because the key is now attached to your Microsoft account, you can reinstall later from account.microsoft.com/services without needing the key again.

Professional Plus — direct install

  1. Install from the official ISO or the Office Deployment Tool (both come from Microsoft's servers — never install Office from a random download site).
  2. Open any Office app. When prompted, choose Enter a product key and paste your key.
  3. Activation completes online in seconds.
Tip: if no activation prompt appears, go to File → Account inside Word and look for “Change Product Key.” You can also activate from an elevated command prompt in the Office folder using cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:YOUR-KEY followed by cscript ospp.vbs /act.

Step 4: Verify activation

Open Word → File → Account. You should see “Product Activated” above the edition name. If it shows a countdown or “Unlicensed Product,” activation has not completed — check your internet connection and retry, or use the ospp.vbs commands above to see the error code.

Common snags

  • “This key has already been used” during redemption — if you just bought it, contact the seller; a legitimate store will verify and replace it under warranty.
  • Wrong edition installs (e.g. it installed Microsoft 365 trial instead of Office 2021) — uninstall, then use the exact installer for your edition rather than the generic “Get Office” link.
  • Language issues — Office language packs are a free download inside the apps under Options → Language; you do not need a different key.
