Activating Windows with a retail key takes about two minutes when everything goes right. This guide covers the normal path, the command-line path, and the handful of things that trip people up.

Before you start

Check two things first, because they cause most activation headaches:

  • Edition match. A Windows 11 Pro key will not activate Windows 11 Home. Press Win + Pause (or Settings → System → About) and confirm the edition installed matches the key you bought.
  • Internet connection. Retail keys activate online against Microsoft's servers. Make sure the PC is connected before you enter the key.

Method 1: Through Settings (recommended)

  1. Open Settings → System → Activation (on Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Activation).
  2. Click Change product key.
  3. Type the 25-character key exactly as delivered — the dashes are added for you.
  4. Click Next, then Activate.

Within a few seconds you should see “Windows is activated with a digital license.” That digital license is now tied to your hardware, which matters later if you reinstall.

Tip: copy-paste the key from your delivery email instead of typing it. The characters B/8, O/0 and I/1 are the classic typo traps.

Method 2: Command line (slmgr)

If Settings misbehaves, an elevated Command Prompt does the same job:

  1. Right-click Start → Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Install the key: slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  3. Trigger online activation: slmgr /ato
  4. Verify: slmgr /xpr — it should report the machine is permanently activated.

Upgrading Home to Pro with a Pro key

You do not need to reinstall Windows to move from Home to Pro. Enter the Pro key in the same Change product key box. Windows downloads the Pro components, reboots once or twice, and activates. Keep the machine plugged in and online during the process.

If activation fails

  • Error starting 0xC004… — usually an edition mismatch, a typo, or a temporary server issue. Wait ten minutes and retry; see our separate guide on activation error codes for specifics.
  • “Key is already in use” — retail keys are single-device. If you replaced your PC, use the Activation Troubleshooter and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently” while signed into the Microsoft account that held the license.
  • Blocked or invalid key — contact the seller. A reputable store replaces non-working keys within the warranty window rather than arguing with you.

After activation: link your Microsoft account

Sign in with a Microsoft account (Settings → Accounts) so the digital license attaches to your account, not just the motherboard. That makes reactivation after a hardware change dramatically easier.
