Windows 11's hardware requirements caused more confusion than any Windows release in memory. Here is what is actually required, what the popular bypasses really do, and an honest assessment of whether you should use them.

The real requirements

  • TPM 2.0 — a security chip (or firmware feature) that stores encryption keys. Most CPUs from roughly 2017 onward include a firmware TPM that just needs enabling in BIOS/UEFI.
  • UEFI with Secure Boot capability — the modern replacement for legacy BIOS boot.
  • A supported CPU — roughly Intel 8th gen / AMD Zen 2 and newer, per Microsoft's published lists.
  • 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage — trivially met by almost anything.

“My PC isn't compatible” — check this first

A large share of “incompatible” PCs simply have TPM or Secure Boot disabled. Before assuming the worst:

  1. Press Win + R, run tpm.msc. If it reports TPM 2.0 ready, you are fine on that front.
  2. Reboot into UEFI settings and look for “fTPM” (AMD) or “PTT” (Intel) — enable it.
  3. Enable Secure Boot in the same settings screen. You may need to switch the boot mode from Legacy/CSM to UEFI first.

After those two toggles, many “unsupported” machines pass the compatibility check legitimately.

What the bypasses actually do

The widely shared registry tweaks and installation-media edits do one thing: they tell the installer to skip its hardware checks. They do not add TPM functionality, they do not emulate a newer CPU — they just silence the gatekeeper. Windows 11 then installs and, on most 2015-or-newer hardware, runs fine day to day.

The honest trade-offs

  • Update uncertainty. Microsoft states that unsupported installs are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. In practice updates have generally continued to flow to unsupported machines so far — but each new feature release re-rolls the dice, and you carry that risk.
  • No support. If an update breaks an unsupported machine, that is your problem to solve.
  • Security features degrade. Some protections lean on TPM and modern CPU features; on old hardware you lose part of Windows 11's actual security story.
Tip: for a machine that misses the CPU list by one generation but has TPM 2.0, the risk is modest. For a 2012 laptop with no TPM at all, Windows 10-era hardware is honestly better served by lightweight alternatives or by keeping Windows 10 fully patched while it remains supported.

What a bypass does NOT affect: licensing

Activation is separate from the hardware check. A genuine Windows 11 key activates an unsupported install exactly as it would a supported one, and a Windows 10 digital license carries over when upgrading in place. Buying a key is never the workaround for hardware requirements — and hardware bypasses are never a substitute for a genuine license.

Our recommendation

  1. Enable TPM and Secure Boot before concluding anything.
  2. Supported hardware: upgrade normally.
  3. Marginally unsupported (has TPM 2.0, older CPU): a bypass is a calculated, generally tolerable risk — keep backups.
  4. Genuinely old hardware: do not force it. The result disappoints.
