Home and Pro share the same core: same kernel, same performance, same apps, same updates. The difference is entirely in management, security and remote-work features. Here is what Pro actually adds, and how to decide if you need it.
The features that matter
BitLocker drive encryption
Pro includes full BitLocker with manageable recovery keys. If a company laptop is lost or stolen, the data on an encrypted drive is unreadable without the key. Home has a limited “Device Encryption” that only works on some hardware and offers far less control. For any machine that leaves the office with customer data on it, this feature alone justifies Pro.
Remote Desktop host
Both editions can connect out to other machines. Only Pro can be connected into. If you want to reach your office PC from home using built-in Remote Desktop, the office PC must run Pro.
Group Policy and domain join
Pro machines can join an Active Directory domain or Azure AD (Entra ID) and accept Group Policy — password rules, update schedules, blocked apps, mapped drives, all pushed centrally. Home cannot. The moment you manage more than a handful of PCs, doing this by walking desk to desk stops scaling.
Hyper-V virtualization
Pro includes Hyper-V for running virtual machines — handy for testing software, running a legacy app in isolation, or keeping a scratch environment. Home users have to install third-party tools instead.
Windows Update for Business
Pro lets you defer feature updates for up to a year and quality updates for 30 days. Businesses use this to let updates mature before rolling them out to every machine.
What Home does perfectly well
- Everyday productivity: Office, browsers, email, video calls
- Gaming — identical performance to Pro
- Windows Hello sign-in, firewall, Defender antivirus
- Connecting to a VPN or joining video meetings
A one-person business whose laptop never holds sensitive client data and never needs incoming remote access can run Home without ever noticing a limitation.
A simple decision rule
- Do employees take laptops out of the office? If yes → Pro, for BitLocker.
- Do you manage more than ~5 PCs? If yes → Pro, for domain join and policy.
- Does anyone need to remote into their machine? If yes → Pro on that machine.
- None of the above? Home is genuinely fine. Save the difference.
Tip: you can mix editions. Nothing forces a business to buy Pro for the reception PC just because the accountant's laptop needs BitLocker.
Upgrading later is easy
If you start on Home and outgrow it, a Pro retail key upgrades the machine in place — no reinstall, no data loss. Enter it under Settings → System → Activation → Change product key.
We stock both Windows 11 Home and Pro retail keys, delivered to your email within minutes and covered by a replacement warranty.
